Notice how small the AR-15’s .223 full metal jacket round is, and how it’s still intact because it’s encased in steel.
This is why the fatality rate was relatively low among those who got hit.
By design, fully jacketed projectiles have less capacity to expand after contact with the target than a hollow-point projectile. While this can be an advantage when engaging in targets behind cover, it can also be a disadvantage as an FMJ bullet may pierce completely through a target, leading to less severe wounding, and possibly failing to disable the target. Bullet from Las Vegas shooting passed through man, stuck in wallet
Bill Robinson Sr., 63, of Scottsdale got the text from his 35-year-old son, who was attending the Route 91 Harvest music festival on Oct. 1 in Las Vegas. …
The bullet hit Bill Jr. and passed right through him on his right side, according to Robinson Sr.
After the bullet exited, it entered his son’s wallet, ripped through cash and cards and lodged inside the billfold.
The cash Bill Jr. carried with him, presumably to spend on leisure and fun in Las Vegas, was now stained with his own blood in what was the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history.
Doctors told the younger Robinson that if he were hit at a slightly different angle, the bullet could have hit his femoral artery or his spine.
