A recent Rasmussen Poll found that the late news anchor Walter Cronkite still commands a much higher approval rating than do today’s news anchors. 78% of those polled said they had a favorable impression of Cronkite, while only 12% rated him unfavorably. Interestingly, only 20% considered Cronkite liberal, while 37% considered him moderate and 17% conservative.
Perhaps these viewers were unaware of Cronkite’s words on 19 October 1999, when he received the Norman Cousins Global Governance Award from the World Federalist Association. Accepting the award, Cronkite told the audience that “We Americans are going to have to yield up some of our sovereignty … to the better, greater union.”
He went on to say that Pat Robertson had written, “‘We should have a world government, but only when the Messiah arrives. [laughter from World Federalist audience] Any attempt to achieve a world order before that time must be the work of the Devil.’ Well, join me. I’m glad to sit here at the right hand of Satan” [applause].
