Higher Levels of Vitamin D Reduce Breast Cancer Risk by 80%: Study
TORONTO, Ont (June 21, 2018) – A study of 5,038 women (age 55+) in a pooled cohort of two randomized controlled trials and a prospective cohort has found that women with vitamin D blood levels of ≥150 nmol/L [≥60 ng/ml – ed.], which is over three times the level recommended by Health Canada for bone health (50 nmol/L), have an 80% lower risk of breast cancer. The study was published June 15th in the peer reviewed open access scientific journal PLOS ONE from researchers at the University of California San Diego, Creighton University, Medical University of South Carolina and GrassrootsHealth a U.S based nonprofit. The study concluded “Higher 25(OH)D concentrations were associated with a dose-response decrease in breast cancer risk with concentrations ≥150 nmol/L [≥60 ng/ml – ed.] being most protective.”

The chart below shows vitamin D serum levels in US women of childbearing age (18-45 years), by race/ethnicity, based on data from NHANES 2009-2010. 87% of the population had levels BELOW the 40 ng/ml recommended for a healthy pregnancy.

Linda Benskin: In addition, there’s a statistical error that’s been pointed out by two different statisticians and confirmed by a third that says that the amount of the US RDA is off by a factor of close to 10. It’s not just a decimal error movement, it’s a more complicated statistical error than that. But the US RDA should probably be closer to 7000 international units rather than 400 to 800 international units.

Being able to tan in winter in some areas far away from the equator doesn’t mean we’re getting vitamin D. They’re not directly related. Tanning rays (UVA) more easily pass through the atmosphere. UVA rays can also pass through glass, but not UVB.
High altitude decreases the atmosphere (ozone, etc), which could allow vitamin D producing rays (UVB) to get through in winter far from the equator, if high enough and not too far north or south.
