Edward Snowden: Apple iPhone with Secret iFeature Allows Government to Spy on You

Edward Snowden, the infamous former contractor for the National Security Agency who leaked thousands of pages of previously classified NSA intelligence documents, reportedly thinks that Apple’s iPhone has “special software” that authorities can activate remotely to be able to gather information about the user.
“Edward never uses an iPhone; he’s got a simple phone….
At the time, the accusations were immediately denied by Apple, stating that the company is not involved in the supposed PRISM project and that it does not grant government agencies direct access to the company’s servers.
Succeeding leaks showed that the NSA developed spyware that would target iPhones, allowing intelligence agencies to access messages, live microphone feeds, data contained in the devices and location data.

Apple engineered surveillance back door into 600 million iPhones
A highly skilled hacker who presented at the recent Hackers On Planet Earth (HOPE/X) conference in New York has dropped a massive bomb on the state of smartphone privacy. Jonathan Zdziarski, an active member in the iPhone development community who helped work on many early iOS “jailbreak” iterations, says Apple has deliberately engineered back door surveillance systems into the iPhone, allowing both the company and the government easy access to users’ personal data.
During his presentation, Zdziarski, who goes by the hacker alias “NerveGas,” showed detailed slides explaining how iOS is inherently insecure — on purpose. His investigation into the coding behind iOS revealed that the seemingly user-friendly system, which is used on hundreds of millions of Apple iPhones, contains a number of “undocumented high-value forensic services” and “suspicious design omissions,” both of which make it relatively easy for private data to be extracted from users’ phones. …
iPhone constantly at risk of ‘spilling all data,’ says Zdziarski
Zdziarski named three specific undocumented iOS services — “lockdownd,” “pcapd” and “mobile.file_relay” — that appear to have been installed on more than 600 million iPhones for the purpose of collecting data. Other intentional failures like the iPhone’s “unmarried” authentication passcode allow for third-party access to the device without users’ consent.
“Your device is almost always at risk of spilling all data, since it’s almost always authenticated, even while locked,” explained Zdziarski, noting that this constant state of authentication appears to be an intentional design “flaw.”

“Regardless of what happens, if I end up in chains in Guantanamo, I can live with that,” the 31-year-old former NSA contractor said.
Analysts working for the National Security Agency routinely pass around private, intimate photos found in the stream of communications data intercepted, according to Edward Snowden.
In a new, extensive video interview, the fugitive leaker said the fraternizing practice is seen as a “fringe benefit” of working for the intelligence agency.
“You got young enlisted guys, 18-to-22 years old—they’ve suddenly been thrust into a situation with extraordinary responsibility where they now have access to all of your private records,” Snowden told The Guardian. “Now, in the course of their daily work, they stumble across something that is completely unrelated to their work in any sort of necessary sense, for example, an intimate nude photo of someone in a sexually compromising situation, but they’re extremely attractive.”
Snowden, speaking on camera from Russia, where he is living under temporary asylum, continued:
So what do they do, they turn around in their chair and show their coworker. And their coworker says, “Oh, hey, that’s great. Send that to Bill down the way.” And then Bill sends it to George, George sends it to Tom. Sooner or later, this person’s whole life has been seen by all of these other people. It’s never reported, nobody ever knows about it because the auditing of these systems is very weak. The fact that your private images, records of your private lives, records of your intimate moments have been taken from your private communications stream, from the intended recipient, and given to the government without any specific authorization, without any specific need, is in itself a violation of your rights? Why is that in a government database?

NSA whistleblower William Binney (shown) has made the startling claim that the NSA is recording the audio of at least 80 percent of Americans’ [the world’s – ed.] telephone calls. The NSA acknowledged in 2013, after repeated and explicit denials, that it was recording telephone metadata, but it still denies it is keeping the audio of any American’s phone calls.
“At least 80% of fibre-optic cables globally go via the US,” Binney told the London Guardian July 10. “This is no accident and allows the US to view all communication coming in. At least 80% of all audio calls, not just metadata, are recorded and stored in the US. The NSA lies about what it stores.”
William Binney can perhaps be called the “legal Edward Snowden,” as the 32-year veteran of the NSA did not take NSA documents or reveal classified information in his whistleblowing. And while some have criticized NSA whistleblower Snowden for not following established legal channels, Binney’s character remains unimpeached. Binney has particular credibility because he was the author of the software used to conduct the domestic surveillance, which he had created to spy on foreign governments and terrorist threats. Binney explained in a 2012 documentary short film that:
After 9/11 they took one of the programs I had done — the back end of it — and started to use it to spy on everybody in this country. That was a program they created called STELLAR WIND. That was separate and compartmented from the regular activity that was ongoing because it was doing domestic spying.
It was because his software had been turned on American citizens that Binney took his protests public and resigned from the NSA on October 31, 2001. “The ultimate goal of the NSA is total population control,” Binney told The Guardian July 10….

We have all run into them. All over the Internet, there are horrible trolls that seem to delight in making life miserable for other people. But the worst trolls of all are the government trolls. And thanks to Edward Snowden, we now have some startling new evidence of what really goes on behind the scenes. According to newly revealed documents, British spy agency GCHQ is manipulating online discussions, infiltrating the computers of specific targets, purposely destroying reputations, altering the results of online polls, and using Twitter, Facebook and YouTube for propaganda and espionage purposes. If people don’t start getting outraged about this now, the governments of the western world are going to see it as a green light to do even more. Eventually, it might get so bad that we won’t be able to trust much of anything that we see on the Internet.
There is a lot about the Internet that is really awful, but one great thing about it is the fact that it has allowed average individuals to communicate on a mass scale unlike ever before. As the general population has become aware of how powerful of a tool the Internet can be, the elite have become extremely alarmed. Unlike so many other things in our society, it has not been something that they have been able to easily control.
But the elite have been starting to catch up to all of this new technology and are learning how to use it for their own purposes. Thanks to Snowden, we now have a list of specific tools that GCHQ has been using to manipulate the Internet. The following is a short excerpt from a recent ZDNet article about these new revelations…

- GESTATOR: Amplification of a given message, normally video, on popular multimedia websites (YouTube)

- SUNBLOCK: Ability to deny functionality to send/receive email or view material online
- SWAMP DONKEY: A tool that will silently locate all predefined types of file and encrypt them on a targets machine
- UNDERPASS: Change outcome of online polls (previously known as NUBILO).
- WARPATH: Mass delivery of SMS messages to support an Information Operations campaign.
- HUSK: Secure one-on-one web based dead-drop messaging platform.
The list, dated from 2012, says that most of the tools are “fully operational, tested and reliable,” and adds: “Don’t treat this like a catalogue. If you don’t see it here, it doesn’t mean we can’t build it.”

Senator John McCain told a radio show recently that Americans should “accept” the notion that their private conversations are being recorded by the government, even in the privacy of their own homes.

McCain was asked by host Dan Patrick what his thoughts were on the Donald Sterling controversy, in particular the concept of private conversations being recorded and then released publicly. Sterling’s controversial remarks became public after his girlfriend V. Stiviano taped hundreds of hours of private discussions between the two.
“What about taping somebody in his own home, using that…..” asked Patrick.
“It’s the world we’re living in, you don’t like it, but everything I say I expect to be recorded,” McCain responded.“It’s just the way we live, Dan. It’s something you’ve got to accept. I don’t particularly like it, but it is what it is,” added the Senator, making reference to a recent poll which revealed that 53% of Americans believed their telephone conversations were being listened to.
McCain went on to remark that young people were naive about government surveillance of private communications because the country had forgotten the lessons of 9/11.
“We’re all grown people and we have to realize we live in the 21st century,” added McCain.
Though McCain denied that the NSA was listening to every telephone conversation in America, as former NSA employee turned whistleblower William Binney has emphasized on multiple occasions, the space required to store mere metadata and not actual content of conversations is minimal.
The reason the NSA is building huge data centers which cover 1.5 million square feet, like the facility in Bluffdale, Utah, is because the agency is storing actual content of phone calls, online chats and conversations.
Indeed, according to Binney, the NSA is analyzing conversations in real time and has a Google-style search capability for all our communications.
If Americans were aware of the level to which their supposedly private conversations were being monitored, they may be a lot less willing to “accept” such an intrusion, despite McCain’s attempt to couch the debate in the fatalistic notion that mass government surveillance is an inescapable inevitability.

Russia Tests “Total Surveillance” at the Sochi Olympics

The 2014 Sochi Olympics have become a giant testing ground for some of the most intensive, extensive and intrusive electronic surveillance operations ever mounted. There’s even evidence that criminal hackers are working alongside Russian spies to mine information.
“Sochi is a trial run,” says Keir Giles, a cyber security expert at the Royal Institute of Strategic Studies in London. A special section of the Russian security force FSB – the successor to the KGB – has spent years perfecting a total monitoring system around Sochi which automatically tracks mobile calls, email, social networks and all the links between them, adding in data from passenger lists, drones and roadside cameras.
It’s enormously sophisticated and of course expensive – but also, most notably perhaps, the first rollout of a new generation of absolute surveillance. If it works in Sochi, the FSB is expected to deploy its new toy across Russia – and other totalitarian, and supposedly not so totalitarian, countries might also be interested.
