A Glimpse at the Mind-Boggling Special Effects Behind HBO’s John Adams
HBO posted this interesting behind-the-scenes video that gives a glimpse into the kind of special effects that went into filming the popular miniseries John Adams. It’s pretty crazy how they construct entire realities around the actors using CGI.
And you thought Photoshopping was hard…

…that I’ve ever seen, anyway.
[Update and DISCLAIMER] I put this up merely because it’s fun, not because I support Move On.
I’m more into boycotting Wal-Mart, because they’re the RFID micro-chipping leader, and for other reasons; though, I can see some of the protestors’ points here. Especially, what’s up with the Supreme Court giving personhood rights to corporations, anyway? Corporations ain’t people!
I’m not a big fan of protesting on private property in general, but if someone is to do it, how could they have done any better, with the exception of one of the lyrics and the way she’s dressed? I almost didn’t put it up for those two reasons only. I’m not homophobic.
I am greatly impressed by their creativity, imagination and skillful execution of their plan. This was just flat out fun: strength in numbers, a really catchy tune, the tuba, brass harmonies, percussion, jazziness of the clarinet, umbrellas, using the table as a platform, multiple cameras filming not just the band but the customers’ reactions, often favorable.
They stood up for what they believed in, and then they marched out on cloud 9, having really put on a serious protest that also had this big sense of humor with gargantuan momentum!
I’ve played this about 10 times, and absolutely will again. It’s good to crank it up once in awhile.
Freedom!

“It’s an almost unimaginable amount of energy.
If the sun’s power output for a single second could be harnessed,
it would satisfy the World’s energy demands for the next million years!”

So how many suns are in the Universe?
We know from the Hubble Deep Field experiments
that the Universe contains at least 200 billion galaxies!
And these galaxies would contain about 100 billion stars each!
And the Sun is just an average sized star.
Many are enormous in comparison to our Sun!
So 200 billion x 100 billion = ????????????????

Homeowners attempt rescue of tangled cub
ANCHORAGE, Alaska — For homeowners like Dane Havard, who lives on the Anchorage Hillside, it’s not uncommon to see animals right in the backyard, but Monday, Havard was witness to an unusual rescue, and he caught it on video.
His neighbor helped free a baby black bear that was wrapped up in a dipnet.
“John, my neighbor, decided to try to pull the truck up, throw out a tow strap with a hook on the end, and try to grab the net without getting out of the truck obviously,” Havard said.
The plan was to drag the baby bear back into the yard and cut a hole in the net so the sow could get the cub out safely, but the mother black bear wasn’t interested in being helped.
“She was not going to let him get out of the truck and you can hear on the video he’s saying, ‘Come on, I wanna free her, I wanna free him,’ and she just wasn’t going to let him do it,” Havard said.
After a few minutes, the young black bear was finally freed after its mother ripped through the net.
The mother bear then quickly took hold of the cub, giving it a true bear hug.
“It’s almost as if she’s saying, ‘Wait until I get you home, I told you not to go up there,’ kind of like I do my own kids,” Havard said.
What you don’t see on the video, because of where the camera was shooting from was the sow charging at the man who tried to free the cub, but she did not attack him.

City officials are again urging the public to avoid the Rover’s Run trail in Far North Bicentennial Park because of a brown bear sow with three 2-year-old cubs that have been seen travelling it several times in the past week.
A surveillance photo of the trail shot last Wednesday — and posted on a municipal website, bears.muni.org — shows the four bears walking single-file down the winding trail. City officials say there is “a high probability of encountering a brown bear on this trail” and are urging people to “avoid using Rover’s Run under any circumstances.”

I’ve always loved this song: OVERCOME no matter what!! TOGETHER, we can do it — no matter what happens! They can’t take our soul if we stay together in the LIGHT, fighting darkness!
I saw the movie for maybe the first time a few days ago, as it came out just 3 years after I was born. Seven guys get together to free the poor farmers from the oppressors!
Alone, they couldn’t have done it, but together…!!!!!!!
Awesome! We need to ride again, this time without guns, standing up for what’s right, against the dark side — bringing in the LIGHT!
It’s not too late. ONE can happen, today!
Fight the GOOD fight!

To address any controversy around this video, watch our video response (or read the transcript below):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BnH8ei…
We knew this video was going to be controversial. Anytime race is discussed in any capacity, controversy ensues. The racial reconciliation concept was a joint effort between the Red House staff and us. They pointed out the fact that their employees and customer base were like the “Rainbow Coalition”, and we thought something with a comical racial reconciliation theme would be fun, as well as a conversation starter.
For those of you who think this video is racist, we’d like you to distinguish between “racist” and “racial”. Racism is “hatred or intolerance of another race or other races.” Racial is “of, relating to, or based on a race”. This video is very obviously racial as opposed to racist. This video doesn’t promote or feature hatred or intolerance. Rather, it’s the very opposite. This commercial promotes inclusion and reconciliation, if not in a comical way. To point out the obvious, the irony in this video is that it’s completely ridiculous for people to relate furniture to their race. People of all colors are welcome at the Red House, which is something that is taken for granted today, but there was a time in the not-so-distant past during which things as simple as a water fountain were NOT for everyone.
If Saturday Night Live, Mad TV, or Dave Chappelle for that matter, were to address racial issues in a comical way (something that they all do VERY regularly), they would have pushed the envelope MUCH further.
Discussing race in the US is taboo. It always makes people feel uncomfortable. We think it’s a shame that someone saying “I’m white” or “I’m black” creates such a stir. There are real cultural identities within different people groups, and these things should be celebrated and embraced, not swept under the rug.
This video is an attempt to use humor to spark a discussion about race issues, because we still have a long way to go.

OUR DOG BUDDY WRESTLES AND PLAYS WITH OUR BABY WHITE TAIL DEER
My brother found this deer alone and malnourished when it was a tiny baby. My family bottle fed the baby, named Theen until he was eating grass. Several months later he’s very socialized with people, our black lab, and our cats. He is free to wander if he likes and we’ve seen him with several herds of whitetail and axis deer. Apparently he fits in just fine with them. He frequently comes back to the house to eat some catfood and play with our dog, Buddy. He doesn’t care much for deer corn.

A Florida family’s Golden Retriever is being called a canine hero, while the family’s cat should probably be sent to the “dog house.”
Bubba, the retriever, started barking when flames erupted inside the Lake Worth duplex just before midnight.
It started in the front portion of the home, where Saundra Frazer had fallen asleep.
Charles McCauley, who lives in the back of the home with his girlfriend, also heard the barking….
Bubba’s loud barks are being credited with waking everyone up and getting them out of the burning house.
They believe if not for him they would have died in the fire.
The occupants believe the fire may have started when the family cat knocked over a burning candle.

Notes about the wing movements shown:
As it turns out, the first half of this video, which was shot with a Canon HF100 HD camcorder and high-speed shutter, makes it LOOK like the wings are sometimes beating alternately, but that is in fact an effect of the CMOS scan and shutter.
The last half of this video (from 1:33 on) was filmed with a Casio EX-F1 high speed/slow motion camera, and shows the wing movement more accurately – they do indeed beat in parallel rather than alternately. 🙂
