High Speed Photography Helps Unlock Mystery of How Cats Drink

From: Peta Pixel

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NTCxZWYlWC0]

In 1877, photographer Eadweard Muybridge settled a longstanding debate on whether or not a horse completely leaves the ground at any point during its gallop by taking a single photograph of a horse completely airborne. In the same way, photography was also used recently by a group of researchers to uncover the mystery of how cats drink.

Using high speed cameras, they discovered that cats touch the surface of liquids with their tongues (up to four times per second) before quickly pulling back up, causing a stream of liquid to rise upward. Before gravity pulls the stream back down, the cat closes its mouth around some of it, capturing the liquid. The process is quite different from dogs, which cup the water using their tongues and haul it back into their mouths.

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BlhaGk0i4Q8]

Yay for the usefulness of photography!

(via NYTimes)

From: New York Times

… Writing in the Thursday issue of Science, the four engineers report that the cat’s lapping method depends on its instinctive ability to calculate the point at which gravitational force would overcome inertia and cause the water to fall.

What happens is that the cat darts its tongue, curving the upper side downward so that the tip lightly touches the surface of the water.

The tongue is then pulled upward at high speed, drawing a column of water behind it.

Just at the moment that gravity finally overcomes the rush of the water and starts to pull the column down — snap! The cat’s jaws have closed over the jet of water and swallowed it.

The cat laps four times a second — too fast for the human eye to see anything but a blur — and its tongue moves at a speed of one meter per second.

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a4M2luaVbtQ]Alex Jones Police State Report: Rosamaria: Justice for Dunkin’ Dog!!!

TheAlexJonesChannel | July 20, 2010

The Tragedy

On July 4th I was driving alone with my service dog of almost 8 years of age, Dunkin’, in the rear seat towards the middle. I was pulled over on I-17 after being tailed for about one mile. The cop was very close to the rental car I was driving which was a gray Toyota corolla. The vehicle was due back on Sunday and I had planned on returning it, then utilizing the airport shuttle to catch my early flight back to New York’s La Guardia airport with Dunkin as my travel companion.

I pulled over to a safe spot on the shoulder of the road and the cop opened the door and drew out a shot gun. He actually AIMED it at me. I could see his eye aiming and it made no sense. I was shouted at and told to keep my hands where he can see them. This seemed very strange and not at all common for being pulled over. I could hear shot gun cocked and I realized that something was not right. I obeyed his shouts to keep my hands up and I allowed Dunkin to continue sleeping in order to keep us both calm. I was ordered to get out of the car, walk backwards without looking, and was very confused… I was going further and further away from Dunkin’.

I was shouted at to kneel, yelled at and then immediately cuffed and put in the back seat of a cop car. I immediately told him that my service animal is in the back of the car and to please be careful with him as he is license in NY state and is official for my Multiple Sclerosis. The car was overwhelmingly hot and my MS symptoms began as I tried breathing for fresh air. It was getting hotter and now he was drawing a weapon to the vehicle. I was very frightened that they would kill Dunkin’ as they looked like they would do so with the weapons drawn so intently.

The cop opened the rental car door which was nearest the I-17 traffic. Dunkin’ rested soundly on that side of the vehicle. When the door was opened, the cop let him get out of the car onto oncoming traffic. Dunkin’ got out of the vehicle confused. He ran into oncoming traffic, looking for me. His mission is to look for me, wherever I may be. As cars swerved and missed him… I screamed. I prayed and screamed at the top of my lungs for my companion’s safety. The cop S.D Soto (who was the one who aimed at me through his shotgun, also cuffed me) walked to the front of the car passenger area. He pulled out Dunkin’s fluorescent orange service vest and read the insert in his pocket which states that he is a service animal and he is protected under the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990. S.D Soto Read the facts, read my rental agreement (which was located on the passenger seat area) and continued to ignore my pleas for help and air conditioning.

At this point a red headed cop was on the scene too, along with a thicker sized blonde-red headed cop. I will never forget their faces. One wore shades, the other had glasses and piercing blue eyes. They completely ignored my existence and did not check on me. Someone chased Dunkin’ and I told them that he would ONLY come to me. I begged and pleaded to allow them to let me call for him. S.D Soto told me to shut up and I was annoying him. He said that he would gag me next, if I said another word and did not cooperate.

Katherine relates the woeful stories of non-working microchips in pets.  Microchips cause cancer, migrate and often do not work.  A family complied with EU requirements for vaccinations and microchips when travelling from the UK to France.  France couldn’t read the chip so the dog is in quarantine and neither country will let the dog in.  In VA, a dog’s chip was not read so it was put to death because the owner relied on the chip and called the shelter minutes too late.  A woman was arrested for buying cold medicine three times in one week for her son and daugher-in-law.  Thanks for the email from Vince (IN).

WASHINGTON – A Northwest woman is devastated after she says her pet of 13 years was shot and killed by D.C. police.

Marietta Robinson, 62, is still visibly traumatized after witnessing her 13 year old companion, Wrinkles, be shot and killed Tuesday night.

Robinson says the pitbull mix grew to be more than 100 pounds.

“I’ve had her since she was the size of my wrist… I still can’t believe this,” said Robinson.

According to the search warrant, six officers showed up at Robinson’s door in the 1300 block 5th Street NW around 9 Tuesday night in search of drugs and paraphrenalia in relation to her 28-year-old grandson. Robinson says he hasn’t lived in the home in years.

“My grandson couldn’t even come in here ’cause he hasn’t lived here so long. My dog don’t know my grandson,” said Robinson.

Robinson says she let them in under one condition.

“I said ‘can I put my dog in the bathroom?’…The officer said ‘yes’ and then he opened the door and shot her,” Robinson told us.

Bullet holes in the bathroom mark the spot where Wrinkles was killed.

“You can see all of the bullet holes, about eight bulletholes in this door. There is a bullet holein the dryer..all up and down the steps. There’s bullets everywhere,” pointed out Robinson.

According to Robinson, officers ransacked her house and then opened the bathroom door and fired shots.

After the third shot, she says Wrinkles jumped up and bit one of the officers.

Police say the dog bit the officer through her boot, puncturing the skin, and would not let go.

“The first three shots I was right here sitting on a crate,” said Robinson. “They opened the door and they started shooting the dog. And I screamed. I backed up and I said ‘please don’t shoot her, please don’t shoot her.'”

Robinson told us, “She bit him after they opened the door, which she wouldn’t have bit ’em if they hadn’t opened the door.”

After the dog was killed, she says officers used her water cooler.

“They washed their hands in my drinking water. There is a bathroom right there. They could have washed in the sink,” stated Robinson.

Authorities confirm one of the officers discharged his weapon after being attacked by the dog. The circumstances of how it happened are under investigation.

“We look through the whole incident to see if there is anything we could have done better differently policies violated all those other things so that will happen in this case like any other discharge of firearm,” said Police Chief Cathy Lanier.

The Chinese government is considering taking meat from domestic animals off menus across the country, raising concerns among dog farmers who have relied on the industry for generations.

The draft proposal to ban dog and cat meat has drawn an angry outcry from regions where the dish is popular.

Opponents say the ban would destroy local culinary traditions.

May 03, 2010 — This video shows a search warrant served by the Columbia Mo. police department. The cops bust in this guys house in the middle of the night and shoot his two dogs (one a pit bull that was caged in the kitchen and the other a Corgi) with children in the home. it turns out that rather than a big time drug dealer, this guy had a small pipe with some resin in it, a grinder, and what the cops here call “a small amount of marijuana” (meaning less than a few grams). We here in Columbia want everyone to know what kind of police department we have here, check out our “finest” in action.

One of the comments:

READ THE DISCRIPTION! The PIT BULL was CAGED! They shot it though the cage! The only lose dog was a corgi! And If the cops can’t handle a corgi they need to be fired.

Dog versus Deer: Our dog Buddy wrestles and plays with our baby white tail deer that we bottle fed…

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GnZSTkycovg]Dog versus Deer

OUR DOG BUDDY WRESTLES AND PLAYS WITH OUR BABY WHITE TAIL DEER

My brother found this deer alone and malnourished when it was a tiny baby. My family bottle fed the baby, named Theen until he was eating grass. Several months later he’s very socialized with people, our black lab, and our cats. He is free to wander if he likes and we’ve seen him with several herds of whitetail and axis deer. Apparently he fits in just fine with them. He frequently comes back to the house to eat some catfood and play with our dog, Buddy. He doesn’t care much for deer corn.

Dog Saves Family From Cat-Started Fire

From: wlbz2.com

A Florida family’s Golden Retriever is being called a canine hero, while the family’s cat should probably be sent to the “dog house.”

Bubba, the retriever, started barking when flames erupted inside the Lake Worth duplex just before midnight.

It started in the front portion of the home, where Saundra Frazer had fallen asleep.

Charles McCauley, who lives in the back of the home with his girlfriend, also heard the barking….

Bubba’s loud barks are being credited with waking everyone up and getting them out of the burning house.

They believe if not for him they would have died in the fire.

The occupants believe the fire may have started when the family cat knocked over a burning candle.

Dogs & Cats—Vaccines removing the natural intelligence of cells? “Vaccinated dogs had developed autoantibodies to their own DNA”

From: Cryptogon, Why Do 160,000 Cats Each Year in the USA Develop Terminal Cancer at Their Vaccine Injection Sites

Via: Dogsadversereactions

The vaccinated, but not the non-vaccinated, dogs in the Purdue studies developed autoantibodies to many of their own biochemicals, including fibronectin, laminin, DNA, albumin, cytochrome C, cardiolipin and collagen.

This means that the vaccinated dogs — ”but not the non-vaccinated dogs”– were attacking their own fibronectin, which is involved in tissue repair, cell multiplication and growth, and differentiation between tissues and organs in a living organism.

The vaccinated Purdue dogs also developed autoantibodies to laminin, which is involved in many cellular activities including the adhesion, spreading, differentiation, proliferation and movement of cells. Vaccines thus appear to be capable of removing the natural intelligence of cells. …

The Purdue studies also found that vaccinated dogs were developing autoantibodies to their own collagen. About one quarter of all the protein in the body is collagen. Collagen provides structure to our bodies, protecting and supporting the softer tissues and connecting them with the skeleton. It is no wonder that Canine Health Concern’s 1997 study of 4,000 dogs showed a high number of dogs developing mobility problems shortly after they were vaccinated (noted in my 1997 book, What Vets Don’t Tell You About Vaccines).

Perhaps most worryingly, the Purdue studies found that the vaccinated dogs had developed autoantibodies to their own DNA. …

Study: Dogs Empathize with People

From: Telegraph

Evidence that dogs may be able to read the mind of their owners comes today with a study that shows that dogs can “catch” human yawns.

Scientists have known for decades that yawns are infectious among people, so much so that simply reading or thinking about them can trigger a chain reaction of gaping mouths in what they call “contagious yawning”.

Yawns can spread in a similar way among chimpanzees and macaques too, though not among people with autism, and is thought to be linked with empathy and the ability to read the thoughts of another individual.

Now the first ever study to report that human yawns induce yawning in dogs is published today in the journal Biology Letters by a team led by Dr Atsushi Senju of Birkbeck College, University of London.

They presented 29 dogs with yawning humans and also with a control movement, where people just opened their mouths.

Even though a wide variety of breed was represented, such as Dobermans, Yorkshire Terriers, Dachshund, Spaniels, Labradors and more besides, they found that 21 of the dogs yawned in response, showing that “dogs possess the capacity for a rudimentary form of empathy.”

China flaying animals alive: Investigation reveals images so graphic, nightmares rampant among probe team

From: WorldNetDaily

Editor’s Note: The descriptions and video of China’s fur industry in this story will be disturbing to  some readers.

The newest controversy over exports from China has caused nightmares for researchers documenting the abuse inflicted on animals bred and raised in tiny cages and then skinned alive for their fur.

WND has reported multiple times on problems with exports from China, with poison found in pajamas, consumers warned against using ginger, an alert about the dangers from China’s pickled vegetables and even the dangers from honey and fireworks.

Now comes word from an extended investigation into the fur trade that China is estimated to produce approximately 85 percent of the world’s fur products – and it has virtually no regulations or rules for the treatment of the animals.

According to Mark Rissi, a spokesman for Swiss Animal Protection, which has documented abuse of animals raised for their fur as early as 1983, the China project has been going on for several years.

The organization’s report has been made available online, with dramatic images and descriptions that researchers found more than disturbing.

“As animals are considered objects in China, there is little or no awareness for the suffering of these sentient beings,” Rissi told WND from his European base of operations via e-mail. “The cruelty found was beyond our expectations, and it was hard to document without interfering. It caused nightmares to the team, especially in the editing room, because the scenes had to be replayed and replayed to be edited from six hours down to 20 minutes.”

Snowmachine Critically Injures Mackey’s Most-Prized Dog

From: Anchorage Daily News

NOME — An unidentified man driving a snowmachine early Saturday morning crashed into the back of the dog sled driven by two-time Iditarod champion Lance Mackey during the All-Alaska Sweepstakes and seriously injured a key animal in his Comeback Kennel.

Mackey broke down in tears Saturday, telling how his most-prized dog, Zorro, was critically injured as the canine was riding in the sled’s basket from Safety to Nome — less than 22 miles left in the 408-mile race.

“I was flashing them like mad with my headlamp,” Mackey said. “I was shining my headlamp right in his face, but they kept on coming at me.

Alaska: Dog’s death in trap raises hackles in Indian

From: Anchorage Daily News

[Indian, Alaska is about 10 miles south of Anchorage]

When Holly Grant’s dog ran into the woods near Indian and started making a fuss earlier this month, she thought maybe there had been a confrontation with a wild animal.

“I started calling her name,” Grant said, “calling and calling.”

Trucker, a 3-year-old pitbull-Labrador cross, did not come, however. So finally Grant waded into the snowy forest looking for her pet.

What she found horrified her.

“When I saw her, she was caught in this trap trying to get out,” Grant said.

The trap in question was a Conibear body-gripping trap, the kind of trap known as a killer trap.
