Judge backs Christian soldier’s conscientious objector petition—Alaska based paratrooper previously denied by Army

From: Anchorage Daily News

The Army should grant conscientious objector status to Pfc. Michael Barnes, a Fort Richardson-based paratrooper who had his request for that designation denied last year, U.S. Magistrate John D. Roberts concluded Tuesday.

A native of Portland, Ore., Barnes, 26, said he enlisted in the Army for five years in March 2005 with the idealistic goal of “defending freedom and helping other people in countries no one else would help.

That same year, however, while training for deployment to Iraq as part of the 4th Airborne Brigade Combat Team at Fort Richardson, he grew increasingly troubled by the tales he heard from soldiers returning….

But after his unit landed in Kuwait, then Iraq, in the fall of 2006, he began to witness bad behavior firsthand….

“The cumulative evidence is that he was not acting — as the Army tried to argue — in a manipulative or an expedient fashion,” Fortier said. “He was following his conscience to a much higher calling than whatever the Army was expecting him to do.”

Winter Soldier: US Vets, Active-Duty Soldiers from Iraq & Afghanistan Testify About the Horrors of War | US War Crimes Confessed!

From: Democracy Now

US veterans gathered in Maryland this past weekend to testify at Winter Soldier, an eyewitness indictment of atrocities committed by US troops during the ongoing occupations in Iraq and Afghanistan. Soldiers spoke of free-fire zones, the shootings and beatings of innocent civilians, racism at the highest levels of the military, sexual harassment and assault within the military, and the torturing of prisoners. While the corporate media ignored the story, we broadcast their voices. [includes rush transcript]

McCain defends ‘100 years in Iraq’ statement

From: CNN

WASHINGTON (CNN) — Republican presidential front-runner Sen. John McCain on Thursday defended his statement that U.S. troops could spend “maybe 100” years in Iraq — saying he was referring to a military presence similar to what the nation already has in places like Japan, Germany and South Korea.

This week, Democratic presidential candidates Sen. Hillary Clinton and Sen. Barack Obama both took McCain to task for the comments, saying that if he’s elected he would continue what they call President Bush’s failed policies in Iraq.

“It’s not a matter of how long we’re in Iraq, it’s if we succeed or not,” McCain said to CNN’s Larry King.

Romney: Iraq War a Good Idea & “We Ought to Double Guantanamo”

From: New York Times Florida Republican Debate Transcript

MR. RUSSERT: Governor Romney, was the war in Iraq a good idea worth the cost in blood and treasure we have spent?

MR. ROMNEY: It was the right decision to go into Iraq. I supported it at the time; I support it now.

From: CFR South Carolina Repulican Debate Transcript

MR. ROMNEY: … Some people have said, we ought to close Guantanamo. My view is, we ought to double Guantanamo. We ought to make sure that the terrorists — (applause) — and there’s no question but that in a setting like that where you have a ticking bomb that the president of the United States — not the CIA interrogator, the president of the United States — has to make the call. And enhanced interrogation techniques have to be used — not torture but enhanced interrogation techniques, yes.

Ron Paul Grilled (yet SHINES) on “Meet the Press” 12/23/07

Russert’s Disgusting Affront To Ron Paul, by Jim Kirwan

Watched Ron Paul’s interview this morning on Meet The ‘Press’…

That was ‘interesting’ – I’ve never seen the bullfrog (Russert) quite so determined to destroy anything.

He did not refer to Paul as a ‘dark horse’ or even a ‘long shot’ – but he did try to use Paul’s very long record of public service to try and destroy Paul’s credibility.

Russert didn’t smile, didn’t look into the camera, just read his little digs into the interview in rapid fire-succession. Mostly, Paul was not allowed to even finish his own sentences – the exact opposite of Russert’s interviews with insiders…where Russert finishes their sentences for them with a huge grin.

Still, Ron held his own, and then some. … Russet went back to the 1980’s for “background” on Paul’s positions (fully half of which were either outright lies or bruising half-truths) – something no other candidate will ever be threatened with, much less have to explain. …

Excerpts from:

‘Meet the Press’ transcript for Dec. 23, 2007

MR. TIM RUSSERT: Our issues this Sunday: Our Meet the Candidates 2008 series continues, an exclusive interview with Republican Ron Paul. He has served in the U.S. House of Representatives for 18 years. In 1988 he was the Libertarian Party candidate for president. Since October he has raised nearly $19 million. That is more than any other Republican candidate for president. Our guest, Dr. Ron Paul.

Midnight Oil: “Beds are Burning” (subtitled)

This song may appear a bit strange. But to me, it’s a powerful depiction about a human drawing a line in the sand and saying to the dark forces: “no more!!”

An example is Gandalf in Lord of the Rings, when he stood up to Balrog, the fire demon, to save Frodo and friends, proclaiming: “YOU SHALL NOT PASS!!!”

I have a live version of this on CD which I like better.

Powerful stuff!

’60 Minutes’: Most of Iraq’s Christians Have Fled or Been Killed

From: CBS News

Before the war, it’s estimated there were about a million Christians in Iraq. They were a small minority, but free to worship, free to build churches, and free to speak the ancient language of Jesus, Aramaic. But, after the invasion, Muslim militants launched a war on each other and the cross. On Sunday, Aug. 1, 2004, five churches were bombed. The Iraqi Christian community, which had survived invasions by Mongols and Turks, was driven out under American occupation. No one can be sure, but Canon White estimates most of Iraq’s Christians have fled or been killed. Those still here are too old, too ill or too poor to run.
