It was man-made, was designed as a boat, incorporates principles of advanced hydrodynamics, had decks and interior chambers, is the proper dimension, is in the right geographical location, is accompanied by large anchor stones, has been visited by religious pilgrims for thousands of years, is consistent with the Bible, the Koran, the Torah, and the ancient tablets from Sumer, and is surrounded by mountains and villages which carry names from antiquity relating to the Ark’s landing. There was always one minor mystery that nagged at me, though—why there had been such a craze for westerns during the 1950s. Hollywood produced more than 1,000 western movies during that decade.1,2

But it was the abundance of Westerns on television that puzzled me most. In 1959 alone, 30 westerns were featured in prime-time. …

Why so many westerns? I didn’t believe it was from public demand, because, as I pointed out in my post on the “Golden Age,” it has really always been agendas that have driven network programming, not “public opinion.” …

I believe the basic purpose of the westerns craze was to de-sensitize the public to killing, to weaken respect for the Sixth Commandment, “Thou Shalt Not Kill.” Killing was made laudable. Of course, in the film or TV show, the killing would be made to look justifiable. And there is no question that, in real life, weapons sometimes have to be used in self-defense. Let’s just say the westerns went way overboard. Not that there wasn’t real lawlessness in the Old West, but this made it the perfect venue for dramatization of violence.

There were other genres, of course, that included killing, such as police shows, but on TV I think westerns won the body count prize.

During the sixties, westerns largely fell out of vogue. By 1969, by my count, the number had dropped from 30 to 6. Westerns had served their purpose, and the networks shifted from attacking the Sixth Commandment to the Seventh—“Thou Shalt Not Commit Adultery”—as the “new morality” of the “swinging sixties” was to be normalized for the public.

I will tell you frankly why I think establishment America is making a major turn towards acceptance and promotion of evil:

In the first place, I think immorality is rampant in this nation. It starts when youth are young, both in high school and in college, where promiscuous behavior is common and even expected. This loose morality follows people in or out of marriage with affairs, pornography addiction and later on to dissatisfaction with their marriage partners (or otherwise), ending in further unfaithfulness and divorce.

It’s not that immorality is the only essence of corruption in society, but it is a key factor because of how it affects the workings of conscience which are intertwined with our judgment and ethics in everything from business to religion and politics.

As I’ve explained in detail in my essay on “The Still Small Voice of Conscience” this spiritual receptor in the mind not only receives promptings, warnings and reminders from God’s side but also Satanic forces [unless we learn how to be free of the demonic voices/thoughts – ed.] which seem to have equal access—depending on which voices we choose to listen to, and all those rationalizations and excuses to violate the moral standards of God come from the dark side. Sometimes it’s hard to tell whether it’s the light side or dark side speaking to our mind because it all comes in our own style and manner of thinking. Only the content is distinguishable.

But once a person makes a habit of listening to the tempting, soft, easy, self-justifying voices of Satan’s messengers a person starts listing toward the looser side of life. They begin to favor abortion, knowing that their immorality might require it someday. They no longer see anything wrong with sexually explicit films and videos, and feel hypocritical holding their teenage children to a standard they themselves don’t live.

When you first read this passage it may seem like the Bible is banning Christmas trees but this is the result of making two big mistakes.
