Japanese yen had risen to historic highs just before the trio of tragedies last Friday. Now the picture has changed. The G-7 (group of seven industrialized countries) promises to ‘support’ Japan’s recovery by intervening in the currency markets. Japan’s central bank has pumped $470 billion of newly created money into the system to stimulate borrowing for reconstruction. The Japanese government likes that because it makes their exports cheaper to other countries. That boosts their export sales, but only at the expense of the Japanese people who then are crushed by inflation. Last week we once again heard numerous voices calling for intervention in Libya. Most say the US should establish a “no-fly” zone over Libya, pretending that it is a benign, virtually cost-free action, and the least we could do to assist those trying to oust the Gaddaffi regime. Let us be clear about one thing: for the US to establish a “no fly” zone over all or part of Libya would constitute an act of war against Libya. Establishing any kind of military presence in the sovereign territory of Libya will require committing troops to engage in combat against the Libyan air force, as well as anti-aircraft systems. The administration has stated that nothing is off the table as they discuss US responses to the unrest. This sort of talk is alarming on so many levels. Does this mean a nuclear strike is on the table? Apparently so.

In this case, I would like to make sure we actually follow the black letter of the law provided in the Constitution that explicitly grants Congress the sole authority to declare war. This week I will introduce a concurrent resolution in the House to remind my colleagues and the administration that Congress alone, not the president, decides when to go to war. It is alarming how casually the administration talks about initiating acts of war, as though Article 1 Section 8 of the Constitution does not exist. Frankly, it is not up to the President whether or not we intervene in Libya, or set up “no-fly” zones, or send troops. At least, it is not if we follow the Constitution. Even by the loose standards of the War Powers Resolution, which cedes far too much power to the president, he would have no authority to engage in hostilities because we have not been attacked — not by Gaddafi, and not by the rebels. This is not our fight. If the administration wants to make it our fight, let them make their case before Congress and put it to a vote. I would strongly oppose such a measure, but that is the proper way to proceed.

Constitutional questions aside, Congress also needs to consider the interests of the American people. Again, we have not been attacked. Whatever we may think about the Gaddafi regime, we must recognize that the current turmoil in Libya represents an attempted coup d’etat in a foreign country. Neither the coup leaders nor the regime pose an imminent threat to the United States and therefore, as much as we abhor violence and loss of life, this is simply none of our business. How can we commit our men and women in uniform to a dangerous military operation in Libya when they swore an oath to protect and defend the Constitution? We must also understand that our intervention will undermine the legitimacy of whatever government prevails in Libya. Especially if it is a bad government, it will be seen as our puppet and further radicalize people in the region against us. These are terrible reasons to put our soldiers’ lives at risk.

Finally we need to consider the economic cost. We don’t have the money for more military interventions overseas. We don’t have the money for our current military interventions overseas. We have to rely on the Fed’s printing presses and our ability to borrow from China to fund these wars. That alone should put an end to any discussion about getting involved in Libya’s civil war.

The unfolding disaster at the Fukushima nuclear plant follows decades of falsified safety reports, fatal accidents and underestimated earthquake risk in Japan’s atomic power industry.

The destruction caused by last week’s 9.0 earthquake and tsunami comes less than four years after a 6.8 quake shut the world’s biggest atomic plant, also run by Tokyo Electric Power Co. In 2002 and 2007, revelations the utility had faked repair records forced the resignation of the company’s chairman and president, and a three-week shutdown of all 17 of its reactors.

With almost no oil or gas reserves of its own, nuclear power has been a national priority for Japan since the end of World War II, a conflict the country fought partly to secure oil supplies. Japan has 54 operating nuclear reactors — more than any other country except the U.S. and France — to power its industries, pitting economic demands against safety concerns in the world’s most earthquake-prone country. …

Botched Container?

Mitsuhiko Tanaka, 67, working as an engineer at Babcock Hitachi K.K., helped design and supervise the manufacture of a $250 million steel pressure vessel for Tokyo Electric in 1975. Today, that vessel holds the fuel rods in the core of the No. 4 reactor at Fukushima’s Dai-Ichi plant, hit by explosion and fire after the tsunami.

Tanaka says the vessel was damaged in the production process. He says he knows because he orchestrated the cover-up. When he brought his accusations to the government more than a decade later, he was ignored, he says.

The accident occurred when Tanaka and his team were strengthening the steel in the pressure vessel, heating it in a furnace to more than 600 degrees Celsius (1,112 degrees Fahrenheit), a temperature that melts metal. Braces that should have been inside the vessel during the blasting were either forgotten or fell over. After it cooled, Tanaka found that its walls had warped.

‘Felt Like a Hero’

The law required the flawed vessel be scrapped, a loss that Tanaka said might have bankrupted the company. Rather than sacrifice years of work and risk the company’s survival, Tanaka used computer modeling to devise a way to reshape the vessel so that no one would know it had been damaged. He did that with Hitachi’s blessings, he said.

“I saved the company billions of yen,” Tanaka said in an interview March 12, the day after the earthquake. Tanaka says he got a 3 million yen bonus ($38,000) from Hitachi and a plaque acknowledging his “extraordinary” effort in 1974. “At the time, I felt like a hero.” …

Tokyo Electric in 2002 admitted it had falsified repair reports at nuclear plants for more than two decades. Chairman Hiroshi Araki and President Nobuyama Minami resigned to take responsibility for hundred of occasions on which the company had submitted false data to the regulator.

Then in 2007, the utility said it hadn’t come entirely clean five years earlier. It had concealed at least six emergency stoppages at its Fukushima Dai-Ichi power station and a “critical” reaction at the plant’s No. 3 unit that lasted for seven hours.

Ignored Warnings?

Tokyo Electric ignored warnings about the tsunami risks that caused the crisis at Fukushima, Tatsuya Ito, who represented Fukushima prefecture in the national parliament from 1991 to 2003, said in a March 16 telephone interview.

The Fukushima Dai-Ichi plant was only designed to withstand a 5.7-meter tsunami, not the 7-meter wall of water generated by last week’s earthquake or the 6.4-meter tsunami that struck neighboring Miyagi prefecture after the Valdiva earthquake in 1960, Ito said.

The dangers posed by a tsunami the size of the one generated by the 9.5-magnitude Valdiva temblor off Chile are described in a 2002 report by the Japan Society of Civil Engineers, Ito said.

“Tokyo Electric brought this upon itself,” said Ito, who now heads the National Center for the Citizens’ Movement Against the Nuclear Threat, based in Tokyo. “This accident unfolded as expected.”

Coming Clean

Ito said he has met Tepco employees to discuss his concerns at least 20 times since 2003 and sent a formal letter to then- president Tsunehisa Katsumata in 2005. …

Kansai Electric Power Co., the utility that provides Osaka with electricity, said it also faked nuclear safety records. Chubu Electric Power Co., Tohoku Electric Power Co. and Hokuriku Electric Power Co. (9505) said the same. …

Regulators failed to ensure that safety alarms were installed at the plant run by Sumitomo Metal Mining Co. because they believed there was “no possibility” of a major accident at the facility….

History tells us that Nero fiddled while Rome burned, but Barack Obama is providing the famous emperor with some serious competition when it comes to going AWOL while America and the world face crises the likes of which haven’t been experienced in decades.

Even as the situation at the stricken Fukushima nuclear plant continues to worsen by the hour, and as radiation surges across the Pacific towards the U.S. west coast while Americans panic buy supplies of potassium iodide, President Obama seems remarkably sanguine about the whole affair.

While protests and civil wars rage in Libya and Bahrain, Obama is keeping himself busy by videotaping his NCAA tournament picks, hitting the golf course for the 61st time in his presidency, and partying with lawmakers during a Chicago Bulls vs. Charlotte Bobcats game.

While Japan begs the United States for help to rescue the dire situation at Fukushima, Obama seems more concerned about dressing up nicely to please the media elite at the annual Gridiron Dinner.

Even as the planet faces the threat of a “new Chernobyl on steroids,” Obama has chosen to prioritize a speech about “Women’s History Month,” a White House get-together on “bullying” and a meeting with the Chicago Blackhawks instead of offering any kind of leadership.

But forget Japan, it’s not as if Obama hasn’t got any matters to attend to on the home front, with gas prices surging as a result of an oil spike driven by turmoil in the middle east, as well as a massive budget crisis, not to mention the perilous state of the US dollar and the stuttering economy.

Obama’s fiddling has made the crucial deceision of whether or not to impose a no fly zone over Libya all but academic, with Colonel Gaddafi taking the opportunity to use the delay to crush rebel opponents in key regions.

“But the fun stuff won’t end anytime soon,” writes veteran White House reporter Keith Koffler, who accuses the President of succumbing to “childish distractions” while the world is afire. “On Thursday, the Taoiseach of Ireland will be in town to help the president celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. And then Friday it’s off to Brazil for the start of a three-country Latin American tour.

Granted, Obama is not superman and nobody expects him to act as some kind of omnipotent savior, but the remarkable regularity with which Obama goes AWOL when crises hit not just globally but also in America has become characterisitic of his whole presidency.

Lest we forget that during the course of the devastating BP oil spill crisis, Obama took no less than three vacations, disappearing from public view at the very height of the drama when Americans were desperate for a leader.

Obama’s behavior exemplifies the fact that he is a completely hollow sock-puppet of a president. After being billed as an icon for hope, change and fresh leadership as America sought to reclaim its global reputation, Obama has been nothing but a crushing disappointment and a massive failure.

The whole farce reminds us once again that Obama, like George W. Bush before him, controls absolutely nothing, has no influence on world affairs, and has now stopped even bothering to maintain the pretense that he is anything other than an obedient yes-man whose role comprises of nothing more than following orders from the Wall Street and banking elite that have pulled his strings from the very beginning.

Canon, Nikon suspend operations at certain facilities in Japan

Canon has suspended operations at eight of its facilities in Japan, all in areas affected by last week’s earthquake and resulting tsunami, and is reporting 15 injuries at its factory in Utsunomiya. In statements released yesterday and today, the company indicates that damage was most significant at its EF lens production plant in Utsunomiya as well as in Fukushima, where inkjet printers are manufactured. At both facilities, says the company, “time will likely be needed before operations resume.”

Nikon has also suspended operations at various facilities in Japan, including at its higher-end digital SLR and F6 factory in Sendai (which we visited in 2007). At least four Nikon facilities are affected, and the company is reporting an unspecified number of injuries to employees as well.

In addition, interruptions to electricity and transportation systems, as well as damage to factories that produce memory and batteries for consumer electronics, are likely to have some impact on the ability of Canon, Nikon and others to build and ship digital cameras in the weeks to come.

From the onset of Japan’s post-earthquake disaster, it’s officials have been downplaying the risks and keeping its population, and the peoples of the world, in the dark about the true scale of dangers. Now, with the explosion of a third reactor, other reactors in jeopardy, and a total chain reaction threatening to unfold, it is obvious that reassurances were issued only to keep create a more positive public image.

Governments once again told us that everything was okay, only to later yield to worse and worse news proving that peril was in the air all along. Significant parts of Japan of devastated in war-like destruction, even as greater disaster is unfolding. Meanwhile, the West Coast of the United States and Canada are in the path of the jet stream coming from Japan, and vulnerability to radiation fallout remains a possibility, though this too has been denied before it was admitted. This latest nuclear crisis only proves once again that cover up and deceit is the norm for governments around the world. Japan, the United States and most governments have a long history of this behavior.

Similarly, the American public has been told the economic front is brightening, while billionaires, hedge fund managers and governments around the world eye the dollar’s demise as the world’s reserve currency (and adjust accordingly). Pimco’s largest bond fund is dumping U.S. treasuries on intel that its outlook is dim, while billionaire Carl Icahn has returned some $1.76 Billion to investors, due to lack of confidence and unwilling to face another market crisis.

While no one knows the future for Japan’s nuclear crisis or what will happen in the markets, it is clear that public has not been let in on what is known. The elitist globalists routinely utilize insider information while playing upon general ignorance to maintain confidence and stave off a mass-reaction to unfolding conditions.

With these factors in mind, Alex urges people to empower themselves by researching and trying to grasp the truth rather than passively relying on authorities who can’t or won’t provide the population with sufficient knowledge to weather the storm.

Bowman, a former Director of Advanced Space Programs Development for the U.S. Air Force in the Ford and Carter administrations, and a former United States Air Force Lieutenant Colonel with 101 combat missions. He holds a Ph.D. in Aeronautics and Nuclear Engineering from the California Institute of Technology. Bowman is a prominent critic of the Strategic Defense Initiative, aka “Star Wars,” and has also been a vocal advocate for the 9/11 truth movement. Since the early 1980’s, Bowman has headed up an organization called The Patriots (http://www.thepatriots.us), which mainly consists of former top ranking military officers. The goal of the group is to make public servants follow the Constitution, honor the truth and serve the American people.

Bowman has been targeted with death threats, government harassment and three tax audits in two years as a consequence of his bold truth-telling activism, which all started when he blew the whistle on the fact that Reagan’s Star Wars program was an offensive act of military conquest in space and a means of waging aggressive pre-emptive warfare, disguised as a defensive program. Bowman notes that his dissent was in fact encouraged by Reagan’s own Joint Chiefs of Staff, who privately thought that the whole idea was “military lunacy”. The initial intention was to use the space shuttle as a platform from which to test the star wars technology against targets on earth, states Bowman, a prospect that alarmed the JCS who feared that this would confirm Soviet suspicions that the space shuttle was nothing more than a weapons platform disguised as a component of a peaceful space exploration program.

Bowman compares the notion that John F. Kennedy was killed by a lone assassin by a shot fired from behind when the footage clearly shows the fatal shot came from the front to the equally ludicrous explanations offered for the collapse of WTC Building 7 on 9/11, and points to how the likes of BBC and CNN reported that the building had collapsed over an hour before it actually fell. The difference between 1963 and now, points out Bowman, is the fact that after Kennedy was shot almost everyone had heard about the grassy knoll, whereas the vast majority of Americans have no idea about Building 7 because the mainstream media has completely failed to investigate the matter.

There are new threats and warnings coming from Japan with reports of a possible third explosion on the way at the Fukoshima nuclear plant. This follows Monday’s second blast there which injured 11 people. Japanese officials have been reassuring locals that radiation levels at the plant are within legal limits. Watching the news in Japan was just awful with the triple dose of disasters– a record-shattering earthquake, a tsunami, and a nuclear plant meltdown.

But there was one tiny shred of amazing news that the rest of the world could stand to learn from — despite the totality of devastation and the scarcity of supplies, etc., there have been no reports of looting.  Where supplies have become available from relief organizations, there have been orderly, polite, calm lines with no reports of fights, pushing, or cutting in.  Supermarkets have lowered prices drastically and vending machine owners have opened the doors of their machines and handed out drinks at no charge to those relief workers, emergency personnel and volunteers there to help in the wake of the multiple disasters. …

Compare that to the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, or the earthquake in Chile or nearly any post-disaster behavior around the world.  The incidents of crime went through the roof, looting was rampant, whatever shreds of society that had been barely hanging together completely collapsed at the first sign of trouble.  It isn’t a racial thing….it is a cultural thing….

The corporate media is almost unanimous in its appraisal of the nuclear crisis unfolding in Japan — the meltdown of multiple nuclear reactors will not result in a Chernobyl-style disaster.

Japanese government: We’re in control, nothing to worry about here, now move along.

According to the Japanese government, the explosion at the Fukushima Daiichi No. 3 reactor is not much to worry about. Officials said the inner reactor container remained intact, but this information should be taken with a large grain of salt — the Japanese government has a fairly extensive track record of covering up its nuclear accidents and mishaps.

In 2003 alone, Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) shut down 17 plants because the company had falsified records pertaining to a series accidents that pale in comparison to what is now unfolding at Fukushima and other nuclear power plants in the country.

TEPCO is the largest electric utility in Japan and the 4th largest electric utility in the world.

“The nuclear power plant failures and explosions near Fukushima, Japan are an excellent case example of the failure of government. Here, the Japanese government has been horribly derelict before, during and after this incident,” writes Mike Rogers from Tokyo. “I am not talking about just the Japanese government here. I am talking about all governments. All governments lie all the time. It is the nature of government to do so.”

A former nuclear power plant designer said Japan is facing an extremely grave crisis and called on the government to release more information, which he said was being suppressed, the BBC reported yesterday. He accused the government of deliberately withholding vital information that would allow outside experts help solve the problems.

Masashi Goto told a news conference in Tokyo that one of the reactors at the Fukushima-Daiichi plant was “highly unstable” and that if there was a meltdown the “consequences would be tremendous.” Mr. Goto made his comments prior to the explosion of a second reactor at the Fukushima plant earlier today.

Goto said that the failure now unfolding at Fukushima represents “many Chernobyls.” He said further explosions will spread radioactive material over a very wide area, well beyond the 20 kilometer evacuation zone set up by the authorities over the weekend.

The single Chernobyl event that began on April 26, 1986, released as much as 300 times the lethal radioactive fallout of the Hiroshima bomb, according to the Hiroshima Internaltiona Council for Health Care of the Radiation-exposed. Radiation had been released for 10 days and scattered in different directions as the wind shifted. Cecium-137, strontium-90, iodine-131, and plutonium were the major radiation source for the contamination. Millions of people in the Soviet Union and Europe were exposed.
