This summer has so far been one of the coldest, gloomiest and wettest on record for Southcentral Alaska, the National Weather Service confirmed Thursday.
Should a drop of rain fall today — and forecasters say it likely will [we had many – ed.] — Anchorage will have tied the record for the most consecutive rainy days. …
According to weather service numbers, the period from June 1 through Aug. 11 this year had an average high temperature of 62 degrees, coming in as the 10th coldest on record. The normal high for the period is 64.3 degrees. …
But while Anchorage may not have set any records for the amount of rain, it is on track to be the cloudiest and gloomiest summer in recorded history. As of Thursday, the weather service documented 26 consecutive days with a trace or more of precipitation in Anchorage — one day shy of the record 27 days recorded in 1951.
And Baines said it was likely there would be at least a trace of rain over Thursday night, enough to tie the record.
The weather service has not tallied a fair, cloud-free day in Anchorage since April.

Like many 10-year-old girls, Lindsay Kendrick likes to play sports and attend camp during the summer.
A new study suggests that many American girls are reaching puberty years early.And like a growing number of girls her age, Lindsay also hit early puberty very early. Lindsay’s mother, Beth, said her daughter first started menstruating when she was only 9.
“I thought it was going to happen early,” said Beth. “She’s been one of the tallest in her class, even taller than a lot of boys, and she started having early breast development.”
Kendrick took Lindsay to her pediatrician, who told Beth that early puberty is much more common now, and said that Lindsay’s period would probably start sometime in the next year.
“She started about two months after that,” Beth said.
It’s been a challenge for both Lindsay and Beth.
“She doesn’t like talking to any of her friends about it,” Beth said. “I try to keep up with her to make sure I send products with her to school.”
A new study published in the journal Pediatrics may help lay the groundwork for future research that determines why, as past research has shown, more girls may be entering puberty early.
In the study, researchers assessed more than 1,200 6- to 8-year-old girls in three metropolitan areas for breast development and the appearance of pubic hair, both signs of early puberty. The research showed that by using these methods, scientists may be able to determine more accurately what factors could lead to early puberty in girls.

Iron Mountain A Hoax or Betrayal?

In 1961, the Kennedy administration ordered a “Top Secret” study to determine what problems the United States would face if the world moved from an era of war to a golden age of peace. In other words, how to bring America into the New World Order. By 1963 the selection of the specialist had been made. This study group consisted of 15 experts in various academic disciplines who were selected for their expertise in their various fields. The first and last meetings were in an underground nuclear survival retreat called Iron Mountain.
In the same year that this “Top Secret” study was called, 1961, The Department of State put out a publication (#7277) called “Freedom From War, The United States Program for a General and Complete Disarmament in a Peaceful World”. This publication describes a three step program to disarm the American military, shut down bases and have one military under the United Nations. This “military” would be the world wide police force to be used as “peace keepers” throughout the world. The plan would include that “all weapons of mass destruction” be eliminated with the exception of “those required for a United Nations Peace Force” (page 12 paragraph one). In order to “keep the peace, all states will reaffirm their obligations under the UN Charter to refrain from the threat of use of any type armed force” (page 16, Paragraph eight) To support the UN Charter, the average citizen will need to be disarmed; so they cannot defend themselves against these “peace keepers”. …
In 1963, the same year as the selection of specialists for this “Top Secret” study, President John F. Kennedy made an astounding statement. On November 13, while speaking at Columbus University, Pres. Kennedy stated, “The high office of the President of the United States of America has been used to foment a plot to destroy America’s freedom, and before I leave office, I must inform the citizens of their plight! Ten days later, President John F. Kennedy was shot and killed.
The study was completed in 1966. President Johnson gave the order that the report was never to be released, due to the nature of the conclusions reached. The purpose of this Report was to see what it would take to bring the United States into a New World Order. The “experts” decided that the American people were not intelligent enough to understand what “big brother” had decided for them; and what “big brother” would need to do to accomplish what was decided for them. If the truth came out too soon, the American people would be able to stop it.

The continuation of the war in Afghanistan, some nine years after the U.S. invasion, rests upon endlessly redefining the goals and purposes of the conflict. With the WikiLeaks documents providing growing evidence of the catastrophic state of the conflict, Time magazine has jumped in, as it so often has, with a story designed to convince Americans that the war must continue.
The cover of Time’s Aug. 9 edition features a shocking photo of an 18-year-old Afghan woman whose nose was brutally cut off by the Taliban. The stories associated with the photo assure us that this will be the fate of many, if not all, Afghan women if the U.S. does not continue its occupation ad infinitum.
Of course using the canard of women’s rights as the justification for continuing this war is nothing new, but with the war growing more unpopular by the minute it is forcing war enthusiasts to ratchet up the rhetoric, and scare the American public, by hook or by crook, into abandoning their opposition to the conflict in the name of protecting human rights.
Ignoring for a moment the massive number of civilians – men, women and children – being killed regularly by the 150,000 U.S.-led international troops in the nation, one must remember that while Time has spun the photo as “what will happen if the US leaves,” the tragedy of young Aisha did not happen in some fictional, future Afghanistan unfettered by U.S. occupation. Rather this girl has lived 9 years, half of her life, in U.S.-occupied Afghanistan, and the violence against her happened in U.S.-occupied Afghanistan.

Dr. Whelan, during an interview on CNN, states there are misconceptions about chemicals. One such misconception is that no cases (to her knowledge) exist where a single child or adult has been harmed from trace chemicals in products. She goes on to say that claims of such are absurd, citing the long-term existence of BPA (Bisphenol A) as an example of a harmless trace chemical. Her primary source of reference in declaring BPA safe is the FDA.
Ken Cook, president of the Environmental Working Group, countered by stating that there is strong evidence that trace chemicals have indeed caused health risks and that BPA has been listed as a substance that is being reviewed as potentially harmful by multiple review boards including the Environmental Protection Agency. While the FDA may deem something safe, the same was once said for lead paint and cigarettes.

While Dr. Whelan may not have heard of any such cases where trace chemicals like BPA have caused health issues, the evidence is overwhelming that the risk is present. The Los Angeles Times published a report indicating concerns rooted in the fact that BPA penetrates several layers of skin on contact and may enter the bloodstream at toxic levels. The Guardian also published an article linking BPA in plastic bottles to lower sperm counts in men. Mercury News even covered the effects of low amounts of BPA on lab animals.

Last week the National Bureau of Economic Research published a report on the effect of civilian casualties in Afghanistan and Iraq that confirmed what critics of our foreign policy had been saying for years. The killing of civilians, although unintentional, angers other civilians and prompts them to seek revenge. This should be self-evident. The Central Intelligence Agency has long acknowledged and analyzed the concept blowback in our foreign policy.
It still amazes me that so many think that attacks against our soldiers occupying hostile foreign lands are motivated by hatred toward our system of government at home, or by the religion of the attackers. In fact, most of the anger toward us is rooted in reactions towards seeing their mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, and other loved ones, being killed by a foreign army. No matter our intention, the violence of our militarism in foreign lands causes those residents to seek revenge if innocents are killed. One does not have to be a Muslim to react this way – just human.
Our battle in Afghanistan resembles the battle against the many-headed Hydra monster in Greek mythology. According to former General Stanley McChrystal’s so-called insurgent math, for every insurgent killed, ten more insurgents are created by the collateral damage to civilians. Every coalition attack leads to six retaliatory attacks against our troops within the following six weeks, according to the NBER report. These retaliatory attacks must then be acted on by our troops, leading to still more attacks, and so it goes. Violence begets more violence. Eventually more and more Afghanis will view American troops with hostility and seek revenge for the deaths of a loved one. Meanwhile we are bleeding ourselves dry militarily and economically.
Some say if we leave, the Taliban will be strengthened. However, those who make that claim ignore the numerous ways our interventionist foreign policy has strengthened groups like the Taliban over the years. I have already pointed out how we serve as excellent recruiters for them by killing civilians. Last week I pointed out how our foreign aid to Pakistan specifically makes it into the Taliban’s coffers. And of course we provided the Taliban with aid and resources in the 1980s when they were our strategic allies against the Soviet Union.
For example, our CIA supplied them with stinger missiles to use against the Soviets, which are strikingly similar to the ones now allegedly used against us on the same battlefield according to the Wikileaks documents. As usual, our friends have a funny way of turning against us. Manuel Noriega and Saddam Hussein are also prime examples. Yet Congress never seems to acknowledge the blowback that results from our interventionism of the past.
Our war against the Taliban is going about as well as our War on Drugs or our War on Poverty, or any of our government’s wars. They all tend to create more of the thing they purport to eradicate, thereby dodging any excuse to draw down and come to an end. It is hard to image even winning anything this way. We have done enough damage in Afghanistan, both to the Afghan people and to ourselves. It’s time to reevaluate the situation. It’s time to come home.
