The KingFish lets users track and gather data from cell phones. According to privacy watchers and media accounts, police departments in many parts of the country are using the KingFish or similar devices — sometimes called Stingrays – to catch criminal suspects and fugitives.
The device works by mimicking a cell phone tower and tricking nearby cell phones into responding. When the phone connects with the KingFish or a similar tracking device, the gadget reveals the phone’s serial number and location. Some models can also intercept the contents of phone calls and texts, collect information about what numbers the phone called and how long conversations lasted, and figure out which websites the phone browsed. Others models can deactivate phones or make phones ring. …
“When this device is operated you’re not only intercepting the communications of the target who may or may not be involved in some sort of criminality but you’re also intercepting the communications of law-abiding Americans and invading their privacy and invading their rights. NTSB: Alaska Dispatch News owner’s plane crashed near tour boat in Halibut Cove
A small plane flown by Alaska Dispatch News’ owner and publisher struck trees then plunged into the waters of Halibut Cove near a tour boat after an “aborted landing” Sunday evening, according to investigators.
A preliminary National Transportation Safety Board report on the crash of Alice Rogoff’s Cessna 206 floatplane was released Friday. Nobody was hurt during the incident. Rogoff escaped the aircraft unharmed. …

Citing witnesses, the report said the Cessna “briefly touched down in the calm, glassy waters of Halibut Cove” before it again became airborne. Witnesses consistently reported the plane began “a steep climb to the west,” then veered to the left in a nose-high attitude.
“As the airplane continued climbing in a south-southwest direction, it subsequently struck a large stand of trees on the southern shoreline of Halibut Cove,” investigators wrote. “The witnesses said that during the collision sequence, the airplane’s left float was severed, and the airplane immediately descended, nose first, into the waters of Halibut Cove.”
The plane’s impact point was about 100 feet from a commercial tour vessel in Halibut Cove at the time, according to the report. Rogoff received assistance “moments” after she climbed out of the crashed plane. …
Johnson said Rogoff’s attorneys had declined an NTSB request to interview her. He said that as the plane’s pilot she isn’t required to speak with investigators but must provide a written statement on the crash within 10 days. …
Cole said he advised Rogoff to provide a statement rather than an interview.

My research began trying to determine if the DMV was actually using facial recognition software for the new Driver License (DL) photograph and if so, why? To me, this would be a violation of privacy rights if confirmed. Apparently, DMV chooses to call it “image verification” but it’s the same thing. Most people are not aware of this because DMV is deliberately not telling you, unless you ask. So what happens to the people who refuse to give them their facial biometric data? As of now, right or wrong, you don’t get a license.

That 7.1 quake shook different parts of Anchorage in very different ways

A map provided by Michael West, director of the Alaska Earthquake Center at UAF, shows the acceleration of shaking from instruments placed at various sites in the Anchorage bowl.
Sunday morning’s magnitude-7.1 earthquake shook Anchorage neighborhoods with vastly different force even less than two miles apart, evidence that some pockets of the city are much safer than others.
The finding comes from one of the best urban seismograph networks in the country, conceived almost 20 years ago, installed a decade ago and receiving its definitive test Sunday. …
Instruments in the network show the strength of shaking compared to the strength of gravity. Sunday’s measurements of 15% g in some neighborhoods — or shaking that is 15 percent as strong as the normal acceleration of gravity — are as high as Anchorage is believed to have experienced in the massive 1964 earthquake that transformed the region.
But that quake was 1,400 times stronger the Iniskin Earthquake, as Sunday’s event is called. West said the ’64 quake did vastly more damage with massively greater motion and much longer duration. The rupture in 1964 lasted 4 minutes, long enough to liquefy ground in Anchorage. The rupture in the Iniskin quake lasted only 10 to 15 seconds.
We felt Sunday’s shaking much longer than that — longer than a minute — because of the soft geology of Cook Inlet and the weak soils under the city, factors that amplified and extended the impact.
We had a big rocker this morning — knocked a lot of our things onto the floor — strongest I’ve seen since moving to Anchorage in 1980.
Broke the antler off of the wooden moose that was on top of the piano. Pretty serious : )

Some Alaskans were woken up in the middle of the night by a 7.1-magnitude earthquake that rattled buildings, knocked out power for thousands, and led to some evacuations.
The earthquake struck Sunday at 1:30 a.m. local time in the area of Old Iliamna, about 162 miles south of Anchorage, said the U.S. Geological Survey. The Alaska Earthquake Center recorded about 30 aftershocks in the first two-and-a-half hours after the quake. The largest, at 3:37 a.m. local time, was measured at magnitude 4.3.
There is no threat of a tsunami as a result of the quake. There have been no reports of injuries so far.
At least 10,000 people lost power in the Anchorage area. The city’s fire department said in a tweet that it is “very busy with reports of gas odors, alarm systems sounding, broken water lines, etc.”

This is the ACTUAL SPEED the northern lights were dancing. I was on a 2-1/2 week aurora hunt which took me 750 road-tripping miles from my Anchorage home to the Brooks Range of Northern Alaska. November 1, 2015 was scary windy with snowdrifts forming on the Haul Road but the aurora explosions that filled the sky were fantastic! I’ve been aurora hunting for a living since 1997 and this blew me away. Hope you enjoy.

That’s where the North Slope begins. I’ve driven the 100+ mile leg up to Prudhoe/Deahorse but not this time. I prefer the rough & rugged topography of the Brooks Range….although if you’re looking for caribou & muskox the Slope is good for that. When I start to run low on gas & camper propane I make my way back south and celebrate and top off my reserves in Coldfoot Camp. This truck stop is a lot more inviting when coming home than when you’re going up. …”

Alaska Republican Party Announces that Rand Paul is Visiting Alaska

The Alaska Republican Party Communications Director Susan Downing announced in an email circulated among activists that 2016 Presidential Candidate Senator Rand Paul is coming to Alaska on August 25. He has apparently scheduled trips to both Anchorage and Fairbanks.
From the August 13, 2015 email:
We’ve gotten confirmation that presidential candidate Senator Rand Paul will be in Alaska on Aug. 25 for events in Anchorage and Fairbanks.
Our understanding is that he will be in Anchorage during the morning and two events will be announced soon. He’ll spend the afternoon in Fairbanks. There will be rallies in both locations, and possibly other events.
This is very exciting — one of the top candidates coming to Alaska. We’ll send more news as we learn the details, but this is for your calendar.

A foursome of young bucks fell upon some good luck Sunday as they were pulled from the icy waters of Stephens Passage by a group of locals out to enjoy the last few days of recent sunshine. These good Samaritans describe their experience as “one of those defining moments in life.” …

Tom Satre told the Sitka Gazette that he was out with a charter group on his 62-foot fishing vessel when four juvenile black-tailed deer swam directly toward his boat.
“Once the deer reached the boat, the four began to circle the boat, looking directly at us. We could tell right away that the young bucks were distressed.
I opened up my back gate and we helped the typically skittish and absolutely wild animals onto the boat. In all my years fishing, I’ve never seen anything quite like it!
Once onboard, they collapsed with exhaustion, shivering.”
“This is a picture I took of the rescued bucks on the back of my boat, the Alaska Quest.
We headed for Taku Harbour. Once we reached the dock, the first
buck that we had been pulled from the water hopped onto the dock, looked back as if to say ‘thank you’ and disappeared into the forest.
After a bit of prodding and assistance, two more followed, but the smallest deer needed a little more help.
My daughter, Anna, and son, Tim, helped the last buck to its feet. We didn’t know how long they had been in the icy waters or if there had been others who did not survive. My daughter later told me that the experience was something that she would never forget, and I suspect the deer felt the same way as well!”

Live Alaska loon cam up and running at Connor’s Lake
A live streaming webcam is offering an intimate look at Mother Nature [correction: “our Heavenly Father’s creation”]. The camera is trained on a pair of nesting loons at Connor’s Lake in West Anchorage. …
“In the past you could never get close enough to see anything or else you’d disturb them,” [Jean] Tam said. “But with the camera they don’t care. They don’t know you are watching them, so you can see a lot of detail you normally wouldn’t know about.”
Tam says the female loon appears to be the same one that came to nest on a man-made floating island in the center of the lake last year. Unfortunately, the eggs she laid never hatched. This year there are two new eggs and Tam is feeling optimistic.
“Watching the chicks hatch is exciting because you can see them pecking their way out of the shells. Both of them usually hatch within a day or two of each other,” Tam said.
Tam says if her math is correct the eggs should hatch right around June 30. Viewers will be able to see it all — the loon cam is operating 24-7.

Weather Service: Anchorage’s last winter unofficially least snowy on record

This past winter was unofficially the least snowy on record in Anchorage, the National Weather Service Alaska Regional Office declared Wednesday. …
Only 25.1 inches of snow fell during the 2014-15 winter season, NWS reported. That beat the previous low-snowfall record set in 1957-58, which saw 30.4 inches of snowfall.
The year with the heaviest snowfall on record was 2011-12, when 134.5 inches of snow were recorded.
The seasonal average is 74.5 inches, according to NWS.
