How Vitamin D Helps Fight COVID-19

A simplified review of how vitamin D helps to protect against COVID-19 infection and improve outcomes in those with COVID-19

Vitamin D deficiency has now been shown to increase susceptibility to COVID-19 and increase the risk of COVID-19 severity, including ICU admission and death. Conversely, other published studies have also shown those with higher vitamin D levels (over 30 ng/ml or 75 nmol/L) have a reduced risk of severe symptoms and death due to COVID-19. In fact, an analysis of over 190,000 Americans found that having vitamin D levels of at least 50 ng/ml resulted in a 53% lower positivity rate than those whose levels were less than 20 ng/ml! The first-published randomized controlled trial on vitamin D and COVID-19 found that adding vitamin D to the standard treatment nearly eliminated ICU admissions and did eliminate deaths.

Vitamin D is used by every cell of the body, influences the expression of thousands of genes, and is involved in regulating over 80 biological pathways – importantly, vitamin D is a potent regulator of immune function. However, it may still be surprising how much one vitamin can influence the body’s response to a COVID-19 infection. Viruses in droplets (larger than 100 µm) typically fall to the ground in seconds within 2 m of the source and can be sprayed like tiny cannonballs onto nearby individuals. Because of their limited travel range, physical distancing reduces exposure to these droplets. Viruses in aerosols (smaller than 100 µm) can remain suspended in the air for many seconds to hours, like smoke, and be inhaled. They are highly concentrated near an infected person, so they can infect people most easily in close proximity. But aerosols containing infectious virus (2) can also travel more than 2 m and accumulate in poorly ventilated indoor air, leading to superspreading events (3).

Individuals with COVID-19, many of whom have no symptoms, release thousands of virus-laden aerosols and far fewer droplets when breathing and talking (4–6). Thus, one is far more likely to inhale aerosols than be sprayed by a droplet (7), and so the balance of attention must be shifted to protecting against airborne transmission.

… So what is the science on masks? It comes, interestingly, from the CDC, whose director has told you that masks were magic, more effective than vaccines. But the numbers suggest otherwise.

A new study conducted by 11 medical institutions analyzed a group of people who tested positive for COVID during the month of July. Here’s the interesting part: Among those who were infected, more than 70% reported they had “always” worn a mask for the preceding 14 days. Another 14.4% said they had “often” worn a mask.

In other words, almost everyone who got the coronavirus in July was wearing a mask and they were infected anyway. So clearly, this doesn’t work the way they tell us it works. Clearly, someone’s been lying to us — many people, actually.

How did this happen? Well, the short answer is we’re not sure how so many people got the coronavirus while wearing masks, but there are clues, clues that our leaders appear to be ignoring.

Here’s one: According to a study published in April by researchers at several medical institutions, including the Cleveland Clinic, surgical masks are actually ineffective at stopping the installation of small airborne particles. Instead, the researchers found that surgical masks, which almost everyone is using to protect themselves from the coronavirus and not murder other people, are actually only useful for protecting users from, “large droplets and sprays.” That’s not how the coronavirus spreads.

According to a letter signed by several researchers earlier this month in Science magazine, the biggest threat from the coronavirus “by far” is what is contained in small particles that can easily bypass facemasks in aerosol form. Droplets quickly fall to the ground, but aerosol lingers.

The researchers wrote that the tiny particles can remain in the air “for many seconds to hours, like smoke and be inhaled.” The particles are “highly concentrated near an infected person … But aerosols containing infectious viruses can also travel more than six feet and accumulate in poorly ventilated indoor air, leading to super spreading events.” (source)
